The Sierra Club has released a legislative policy blueprint for the incoming US Congress, urging lawmakers to address household costs, hold polluters accountable, preserve public lands and protect public health and safety. The announcement comes as Democrats regain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, according to the organization’s statement.
The group is calling on Congress to prioritize a “make polluters pay” package, the Energy Bills Relief Act and a tax on windfall profits. Its broader blueprint also sets out recommendations for advancing affordable clean energy and strengthening infrastructure.
Sierra Club Legislative Director Melinda Pierce said the new Congress should act to reverse what she described as damage caused by the Trump administration and pursue lower costs, stronger infrastructure and healthier communities.
The organization said it plans to work with the incoming Democratic majority on clean energy, protection of public lands and accountability for the administration and fossil fuel industry. It also pointed to a Freedom of Information Act effort its lawyers conducted during the administration’s first two years, aimed at examining links between fossil fuel interests and policies at federal agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency, Interior Department and Energy Department.
