Rune Energy is building its business around the idea that existing solar plants could also host data centers. The company says data centers need large amounts of clean, deployable power, while thousands of solar plants remain an underused resource.

The proposed approach is to retrofit solar farms with plug-in, modular data center systems made at Rune Energy’s factory in California. Co-founder and CEO William Layden says the model could address challenges facing data center developers, policymakers and grid operators.

Layden’s view is that solar plants can become more than power-generation sites by accommodating data center infrastructure alongside their existing role.
