India’s solar industry is reaching a turning point as its module manufacturing capacity expands at a pace that is beginning to exceed domestic demand. The changing balance is prompting manufacturers to focus on new strategies to sustain growth.
Domestic content requirements are encouraging investment in the more complex production of solar cells. Suppliers are also considering expansion into wafer and ingot manufacturing ahead of further changes to those requirements, pointing to a broader push toward vertical integration across the photovoltaic supply chain.
Investment in polysilicon manufacturing has been more limited, according to the available information. With production capacity continuing to grow, the sector’s next phase will depend on disciplined investment, improved factory utilization and access to markets beyond India.
