India’s expanding utility-scale solar fleet is creating greater demand for accurate electricity-generation forecasts. However, projects do not follow a single nationwide specification, making implementation dependent on each facility’s individual circumstances.
For projects connected to the interstate transmission system, the principal framework is established by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC). Procedures are also issued by the National Load Despatch Centre, Regional Load Despatch Centres and other system operators.
Projects connected within a state are generally governed by the relevant State Electricity Regulatory Commission. As a result, forecasting requirements can differ depending on the connection point, the entity responsible for scheduling and whether central or state-level rules apply.
The fragmented regulatory and operational framework makes India a significant market for forecasting providers, while also requiring detailed, project-by-project implementation. Reuniwatt’s Hannah Bergler highlighted the importance of accounting for these differences when supporting solar projects in the country.
